Description
In 1908 Steiff made Alfonzo, a 13″ red bear, which was bought by the Grand Duke of Russia for his daughter, Princess Xenia Georgievna. In 1914 Alfonzo accompanied Princess Xenia to Buckingham Palace. The outbreak of war during their summer holiday prevented their return to Russia. Princess Xenia and Alfonzo stayed in London and so avoided the Revolution of 1917. Alfonzo remained in Princess Xenia’s family until 1989 when he was bought at Christies, London by Ian Pout of “Teddy Bears” of Witney for a world record price. (From the Baby Alfonzo’s Certificate.)
